Hidden Orchestra
One critic compared the recent debut album, Night Walks, of this Edinburgh-based band to DJ Shadow’s Entroducing masterpiece in its brilliant innovation. Driven by two drummer/percussionists and dubby basslines the music hovers as subtly mystical and atmospheric as the haze on the moors before the dawn.
Already the band is mentioned in the Scottish Radio’s “The best Scottish jazz artists of all time” catalogue. The music is greatly influenced by bassist-leader John Acheson’s experience as producer and maker of radio documentaries. His way of using acoustic instruments and samples in an electronica-like context makes the sound hard to categorize. Acheson also plays bassoon, guitar and zither. Stylistically you could describe Hidden Orchestra as a cinematic dub jazz band. The live performances have got an ecstatic reception on many a festival.
