Ibrahim Electric
(DK)
world jazz
This wild Danish threesome kicks ass! They don’t much care about borders between different styles as they zig-zag happily through them. Jazz is the home base, but from there they might get into funk, afrobeat, surf, the Balkans or wherever they feel like going at the moment. Luckily their chops are of such caliber that this kind of freak out works musically. In between their own numbers they might throw a cover from Hendrix, Eddie Harris or some other collective favorite.
Ibrahim Electric has Niklas Knudsen on guitar, Jeppe Tuxen on Hammond B-3 and Stefan Pasborg on drums. Pasborg is a superb drummer, who has a mind-boggling amount of bands: Delirium, Toxicum, Ictus, Rød Planet, Ducret-Pasborg Duo, Fra De Varme Lande and Megaphone. He also belonged to Tomasz Stanko’s New Balladyna Quartet.
So far Ibrahim Electric’s catalogue holds five albums, two of which were made with the American trombonist Ray Anderson. Their latest energy bomb is called The Brothers of Utopia. Among their myriad inspirations they mention Fela Kuti, Booker T & the MG’s, Wishva Mohan Bhat and the Tony Williams Lifetime.
