Antti Sarpila Swing Band
Clarinetist / saxist Antti Sarpila’s dedication to dixieland, swing and the classic jazz of the 50’s / 60’s, not to mention his impeccable skills and taste, have been noticed internationally. He performs regularly abroad as well as in Finland. In Pori the Swedish swing master Ulf Johansson Werre joins forces with Sarpila.
Encouraged by his amateur saxist father, Sarpila started to play early, often travelling to the US to improve his skills. At the 1980 Pori Jazz festival he met a key figure of his career: the legendary New Orleans reedsman Sidney Bechet’s disciple Bob Wilber, with whom Antti has played both here and in the US.
The results are documented on the 1993 album Moments Like These. Antti leads a swing band and a classic jazz band, and performs with several symphony orchestras and big bands.
Pori Big Band Plays Antti Sarpila features his compositions. Tribute To Benny Goodman was a live album with the Finnish New Music Orchestra UMO, while Antti Sarpila Meets Markku Johansson put him together with another cornerstone of Finnish Jazz. New Moods – New Sounds on Blue Note 2001 is a timeless collaboration with vibraphonist Severi Pyysalo and a string quartet. The latest albums by the 1997 recipient of the Finnish Yrjö Award (given to an extraordinary Finnish jazz musician since 1967) are Gospel & Spirituals by Antti Sarpila Swing Band (featuring Johanna Iivanainen on vocals) and Swingin’ The Ballet and Swingin’ The Classics.
