The Budos Band
Their ”Staten Island instrumental afro-soul” was conceived from seemingly disparate elements, like the sounds of the ethio-jazz master Mulatu Astatke, Cairo Jazz Band, J.C. Davis and Black Sabbath, not forgetting a healthy dose of psychedelia. African funk meets break beats and soul-infused melodies with dark and ominous guitar and bass riffs. Groovalistic, to say the least!
So far the ten piece band from New York has recorded three albums live to analog tape at Daptone’s House of Soul Studios: The Budos Band I, II and III. They feel that on the third one they are truly coming to their own sound. They are not the only ones feeling so. The New Yorker critic Sasha Frere-Jones named it his favourite album of 2010. On stage the band cook up strong medicine that’s good for mind and body.
