RöD / BLå: Broo_Hulkkonen_Innanen_Riippa_Rissanen_Tuppurainen
Producer/electronicist Pekka Tuppurainen leads his tight team to that exciting zone, where acoustic and electronic music meet. Experimental free jazz is the starting point, but occasionally they may end up on a hot groove, reminiscent of Miles’ most electric period or go totally abstract bringing to mind the old musique concrete. You may also hear some unshackled covers, for instance, of David Bowie/Brian Eno collaborations.
You can get a taste of the formidable skills of this remarkable sextet from Tuppurainen’s recent and excellent Röd/Blå double album, where the internationally renown house music master Jori Hulkkonen is a special guest. Now his analog synthesisers are an integral part of the live band. There is fabulous creative tension between the wild abandon of multi-saxist Mikko Innanen and drum tornado Joonas Riippa and the more cerebral cool of Swedish trumpetist Magnus Broo and pianist Aki Rissanen. Meanwhile in the middle Tuppurainen manipulates the sounds of his fellow players and creates fresh electronic atmospheres with the able help of Hulkkonen.
