Mâäk Quartet & Mika Kallio
Established in 1997, the Belgian French brass quartet develops its character by playing with local musicians in many countries, not the least in Morocco and Mali. Perhaps that’s why the groove is often hypnotic, though all brass band music ultimately comes from New Orleans. Playing locations have varied from concert stages to swimming pools and meat markets! In Pori Mâäk is joined by Finnish drummer Mika Kallio.
The basic quartet occasionally expands to a quintet or sextet. Their latest album, Buenaventura, came out last January. They have recorded Moroccan Gnawas, Malian Bambara hunters and South African poets. The band members have separately worked with Andy Emler, Baba Sissoko, Oumou Sangare, Toots Thielemans and many others.
