Iiro Rantala - Lars Danielsson - Wolfgang Haffner Super Trio
Having first done a really long day’s work with Trio Töykeät AKA The Rotten Jazz Trio, continuously touring around the world and releasing albums, pianist Iiro Rantala has since spread out both by playing with many people and doing solo work. Now he introduces to us his new European Super Trio featuring Sweden’s master bassman Lars Danielsson and Germany’s top drummer Wolfgang Haffner. They won’t have shortage of material, as all of them have new albums out. If Rantala’s My History of Jazz was highly praised, so were Danielsson’s Liberetto and Haffner’s Heart of The Matter.
Piano jazz is now reaching new highs, thanks to bands like The Bad Plus and The Vijay Iyer Band, who tackle the old form in a fresh way. Rantala, however, was there first attacking the tradition with almost manic energy, vision and humor. You could call him the godfather of new wave piano jazz. My History of Jazz offers evidence by rearranging anything from Bach’s Goldberg Variations to Ellington, Monk and Weill, not to mention Iiro’s fabulous originals. Danielsson (John Scofield, Charles Lloyd etc.) and Haffner (Al Cohn, Nils Landgren etc.) are truly experienced players. Their personal catalogues are so long one can’t exhaust them in a week. So start with the above-mentioned latest additions on ACT record label.
