The new indie rock explosion we have seen in the last few years has produced impressive stuff in several countries, but Finland’s own Rubik is right there at the very top with, say, Animal Collective or Arcade Fire. No wonder they tour USA and Europe often. It’s extremely imaginative and multi-levelled music that’s played live with almost overwhelming energy. One of the best bands in the whole world right now!
Rubik is part of the New Music Community with some other Finnish bands and so you often see a horn/percussion section on stage with the nucleus quintet. Instruments are swapped, but songwriter-guitarist Artturi Taira’s breathtaking falsetto vocals are a constant. The band received a lot of eager attention right away with its debut EP People Go Missing (2004) and even more with debut album Bad Conscience Control (2007). Both brought a lot of comparisons to Radiohead, but still they pale beside the awesome Dada Bandits (2009) and Solar (2011). On the latter two albums Rubik soars totally unhinged in its own space with complex but strangely attractive pop structures that even the international music magazines deemed shining brighter than the above-mentioned competitors.
