Francesco Bearzatti Tinissima quartet: Suite for Malcom X
The Italian model, photographer, actress and political activist Tina Modotti (1896-1942) and African-American Malcolm X (1925-65), who grew from shoeshiner to pimp and, after prison, to civil rights activist, were both extremely colourful and influential characters, and so are these suites that the Italian tenorist/clarinettist composed for them. Truly free jazz, where the moods change, while avant-garde entwines with older jazz forms and rock, folk, funk, R&B, hip-hop and flamenco.
Tinissima Quartet features some of the best Italian jazz players, but Francesco Bearzatti has other projects, too. He plays solo and gets romantic as a duo with pianist Bruno Angelini, rocks hard with Sax Pistols and tips his hat to the great jazz thinker in Monk’n’Roll. Total musician can hop from one genre to the other, because he has skills and vision. Both of these suites were highly praised in the international music press and X (Suite For Malcolm) was chosen “the best Italian jazz album in 2010 and Tinissima Quartet “the best Italian jazz band”.
