Jukka Eskola Quintet
The Observer recently called Jukka Eskola (33) ”one of the best trumpet players of his generation”, not without good reason. Taking his cues mostly from Freddy Hubbard and Miles Davis, Jukka Eskola and his killer quintet make modern jazz that is cool by nature, but grooves with an irresistable warmth. Check out his second Ricky-Tick album Walkover, produced, like his debut, by drummer Teppo Mäkynen, and you’ll agree.
Schooled at the Sibelius Academy, Eskola learned plenty of funkiness and groove, while playing in the bands of premier Finnish soul singers Niko Ahvonen and Sami Saari. Having become a very in-demand player, Jukka is a member of the fabulous 5 Corners Quintet. Earlier he worked in Quintessence, Nu Spirit Helsinki, Jimi Tenor Group and Mäkynen’s afro-tinged Teddy Rok 7; all of them very funky groups with highly personal style.
