Ted Curson Quartet
(US)
mainstream, modern & free jazz
Trumpetist Ted Curson has played every Pori Jazz Festival. He’s a solid post-bopper, schooled in the amazing Philadelphia scene of the 50’s with Percy, Tootie and (Curson’s teacher) Jimmy Heath, John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Benny Golson, Archie Shepp, (Curson’s pupil) Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons and Nina Simone.
When he moved to NY, Ted played in the famous Mingus quartet with Danny Richmond and Eric Dolphy. He also worked with Cecil Taylor, Paul Bley, Mal Waldron, Max Roach and Booker Erwin. Curson plays on many classic jazz albums, while being the leader on over 20 albums. In recent years he has tapped the creative spots of jazz from marching band and jump blues roots through cool grooving, hot Afro-Cuban rhythms and beautiful ballads to the fringes of avantgarde with the Spirit of Life band. Check out Ted’s albums I Heard Mingus (2003), Fire Down Below (1962), Tears For Dolphy (1964) and Travelling On (1996).
