Spirit of Life Ensemble feat. Pauline Jean, Grace Kelly, Pernille Bevort
(US/DK)
modern jazz with African, Latin & Caribbean influence
Spirit of Life is a collective of a lot of players, led by percussionist Daoud-David Williams (Pharoah Sanders, Leon Thomas, Ryo Kawasaki, Archie Shepp, etc). The band performs in three capacities with
changing personnel. In Pori you’ll see the basic quartet augmented by special guests. The band distills its holistically afrocentric view of jazz from the rich African-based traditions of USA, the
Caribian, Brazil and Cuba. The accent is on playing as a way of healing and celebration.
Spirit of Life was for years the house band at the famous New York jazz club Sweet Basil. They have recorded several albums with differing personnels, like Journey, Inspirations, Collage and the
latest: That Healin’ Feelin’. Known as the permanent favourite of many jazz festivals, they have recorded one live album in Pori, too.
