Roy Hargrove Big Band w/ Special Guest Roberta Gambarini
(US/ITA)
jazz
This 17-strong big band is led by one of the younger generation’s leading trumpet players and composer Roy Hargrove, who some years ago charmed Pori updating the heritage of Miles and Coltrane with
Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker. On vocals the band features a special guest: Roberta Gambarini. The Italian singer has won several jazz-prizes and played, among others, with Herbie Hancock, Hank
Jones and the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band, not to mention her own trio.
Born in Waco, Texas, Roy Hargrove was a college kid when Wynton Marsalis “discovered” him. Later he studied music at Boston Berklee and New York’s New School, and honed his craft with
Herbie Hancock and Marsalis.
From the late 80’s he has led his own bands, mainly the Roy Hargrove Quintet, focusing on pure jazz, and the Roy Hargrove Factor, which fuses jazz with funk and hip-hop. On his own name Roy has so
far 16 albums, the latest being Ear Food with the quintet. The Afro-Cuban album Habana won him a Grammy in 1998. He has also worked with soul singer D’Angelo and rapper Common.
