Maja Ratkje solo
avant-garde, electronica, ambient
With the help of modern electronica and the most agile vocal cords of the western world this voice artist manages to create her own magical domain. Constantly cross-fertilizing voice improvisation,
musical drama and electronic innovation, she takes some cues from female voice innovators, like Diamanda Galas, Laurie Anderson and Meredith Monk, but doesn’t follow anybody.
Born in Trondheim, Norway, in the early 70’s, Maja Ratkje finished her composition studies at the Norwegian State Academy of Music in Oslo in 2000. Her music has been performed by Klangforum Wien,
Oslo Sinfonietta and Cikada and Vertavo string quartets. She has done music for films, dance, drama and installations. In 2003 she played the lead in her own opera, based on texts of the Nag Hammadi Library.
Maja mostly performs as a solo act or together with the contemporary improvisational group SPUNK. She is also part of the metal band Trinacria, a duo with Jaap Blonk and a noise duo Fe-Mail. Maja has
recorded many albums in many formats, but you get a good over all picture of her work from the recent collection River Mouth Echoes.
