Festival year 2002
37th international Pori Jazz Festival was held between July 13th and 21st.
The Pori Delta Arena was introduced as a new concert venue as Paul Simon, Miriam Makeba and Bo Kaspers Orkester performed there on July 16th. Other notable appearances were made by Joe Cocker, Ike Turner and James Carter.
The festival attracted 122 000 people and 65 000 tickets were sold. There were 542 musicians in town and 106 concerts were given at 11 venues. Half of these concerts were free of charge.
The press was represented by over 500 reporters and there were 1 300 voluntary workers making sure everything went well.
Music was heard for 221 hours (almost ten days if played continuously) and 75% of the music was pure jazz.
The festival brings some 9,5 million Euros to the economic life in Pori and the vicinity.
The Pori Jazz official website was frequently visited in July and especially during the festival – in July 2 859 668 hits were recorded and on July 15th the page was downloaded for over 308 000 times. These numbers are rather respectable.
