Festival year 1989
In 1989 Pori Jazz started on July 12th and the last concert was played on the 16th. Preliminary plans about the guidelines of the festival were made as soon as the previous festival had closed. Plans included two stages in Kirjurinluoto, a jazz cruise to Stockholm and founding an incorporated company. Some of the things were done during 1989 and some were postponed.
There were 12 concert venues featuring some 50 groups. Most praised artists were Cab Calloway, Kenny G, The Blues Brothers Band and Charles Mingus. Monty Alexander, Dee Daniels and Emmet Chapman played at the Keski-Pori Church and the local newspapers had quite a lot of doubts about the concert. Playing jazz at church wasn’t seen as an appropriate thing to do.
