Festival year 1979
14th Pori Jazz festival started on July 12th and ended on July 15th.
Due to the financial situation the organization had no choice but to produce a successful festival. Though the festival attendance had been a bit higher in 1978 than it was back in 1977 this time it had to be significantly higher in order to cover the financial loss. Therefor the organizers decided not to take any chances with the artists. Dizzy Gillespie, B.B. King, Sonny Rollins, Art Van Damme and Tony Williams along with several Finnish musicians gave concerts.
It looked like it was going to rain all through the festival but this time something had changed because the people attended the festival anyway. The audience stood in the rain but the spirit ran high.
In 1979 the “Superjamit” was organized for the first time. “Superjamit” was a special event designed for the representatives of the business world.
Financially summer 1979 was a success that ensured the future of the festival.
