“It’s a return to the full-impact, total-immersion jazz that New York used to have a reputation for incubating”, the NY Times said of Abraham Burton/Eric McPherson Quartet’s Cause & Effect album. On it the alto saxist plays tenor with such passion that it brings to mind John Coltrane’s Impulse- albums.

Taught by the late great Jackie McLean, Burton won the small combo section in DownBeat already when studying in the High School of Music & Arts.

Recently NY Times mentioned him as one of the most formidable contenders in contemporary jazz. Abraham honed his professional skills in veteran drummer Art Taylor’s Wailers blasting bluesy hard-bop. After two albums and countless gigs with Taylor, he founded his own band in 1994 releasing two albums. The other power center in the band was drummer Eric McPherson, with whom he has grown from breakdancing homeboys to young lions of deep jazz.

The two continue working together in their co-led quartet with bassist Yosuke Inoue and pianist James Hurt. Abe has also worked with Jimmy Smith, Louis Hayes and Terumasa Hino.

Members:
