Timo Lassy Orchestra feat. José James

24.7.2010 >> Otava Factory

(FIN/US)
soul jazz, hard bop

Jazz can be artistically uncompromising high quality stuff and simultaneously not difficult to listen to. That's the motto of saxophonist Timo Lassy. Driven by five horns, the sound of his orchestra is strongly rooted in the blues-based, rhythmically hot 60's soul jazz, while being clearly of today. The focus is on catchy themes, burning solos and, above all, red hot grooving.

Lassy started playing classical piano at six, but a few years later changed to sax. He also plays tenor, baritone and flute. Having studied at the Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory and then the jazz department of the Sibelius Academy, Timo rose to fame as a founding member of the U-Street All Stars, who made two excellent hard bop albums on Blue Note. He was also part of the Teddy Rok Seven and Finland's internationally most famous jazz unit, The Five Corners Quintet. Our man in slim suit has so far made two albums on his own name. The Soul & Jazz of Timo Lassy and Round Two have both got a very warm reception both in Finland and abroad. Their material is on the menu now. American vocalist José James (see own bio) was featured on a couple of songs on Round Two, and sings them on stage, too.
