Brazilian music

The award-winning young virtuoso of the 7-string guitar has become one of the foremost musicians in Brazil during the new millennium. Born 1980 in southern Brazil, Costa started to play the local guitar at 7. First he was taught by his father Algacir Costa from the band Os Fronteiricos, later by Argentinean Lúcio Yanel. Yamandu specialized in the folk styles of southern Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, but when he got into Radamés Gnattali, he started to study such Brazilian masters as Baden Powell, Tom Jobim and Rafael Rabello. Today Costa, a productive composer himself, plays chorinho, bossa nova, milonga, tango, samba, chamamé and many other styles. He has revived remarkably the art of Brazilian guitar music.

Since 2000 he has recorded several albums, one of them a collaboration with the veteran clarinettist Paulo Moura. His latest record is Lida (2007). Yamandu also appears in Mika Kaurismäki’s excellent documentary film Brasileirinho.
